Top 10 Things to See in Ipoh

Ipoh may not be on everyone’s radar but this charming city in Perak is one of the up and coming destinations in Malaysia and this list of top 10 things to see in Ipoh was compiled to show place or building that we should see when we visit Ipoh.

2. Kellie’s Castle

Kellie’s Castle was meant to be a home away from home for Scottish Planter, William Kellie Smith in the 20th century. Being distant away from home, Kellie desired his new house to be reminiscent of his house back in Scotland. The castle is perched on top of a hill in what used to be a rubber estate.William Kellie Smith was an interesting man who was famous with his South Indian workers. Kind at heart, he built a Hindu shrine for his workers on the castle premises. As a token of appreciation, his workers erected a statue of Kellie complete with a white suit and hat.construction of this unique castle began in 1915. However, it came to a sudden halt with Kellie’s sudden death in 1926. The solitary castle looks almost surreal in these wild plantations of Perak, it projects a strong personality and an aura of a riddle.recently, efforts have been made by the Perak State Government to save this superb structure from the encroaching foliage. Besides being haunted, the castle is believed to have hidden rooms and private underground tunnels.The road that leads to Kellie’s Castle follows the contours of the land in a dizzying, maze-like fashion, adding to the enigma and romance of the place.

3. Birch Memorial Clock Tower

This tower is constructed in memory of J.W.W.Birch, the first British Resident of Perak who was murder in 1875 by local Malay Chief Datuk Maharaja Lela. Standing in front of the Ipoh State Mosque, the square tower consists of a portrait bust and four panels illustrating the development of civilization.the clock tower has one mother bell, 6 feet 6 inches in diameter and four smaller bells which were used to bang the chimes of Big Ben. At the corners of the belfry, terracotta figures are mounted on base representing the four “Virtues of British Administration” – Loyalty, Justice, Patience and Fortitude. On the civilisation panel, 44 famous figures in world history were portrayed. The statue of the last Prophet facing the mosque was painted over in the 1990s.

4. Enlightened Heart Tibetan Buddhist Temple

Enlightened Heart Buddhist Temple is a sprawling Tibetan temple complex with a high pagoda tucked away in an invisible valley near Ipoh. Unusual and attractive,it is well worth a see.

5. Ling Sen Tong Temple

Ling Sen Tong is a grand Taoist cave temple located at the foot of a limestone hill in Ipoh. The definition of the name is Rock of Heavenly Spirits. Ling Sen Tong cave temple is placed right next to Nam Thean Tong and Sam Poh Tong. It is right off at Jalan Gopeng which is placed on the southern outskirts of Ipoh. The primary temple is adorned with a lot of statues of several unlike designs – there are a few deities, animals and another characters from the Chinese folklore. The garden in front is decorated with colourful and beautiful statues of characters from Chinese mythology. One such example is the Monkey King from the classic tale Journey to the West.

6. Ipoh Railway Station

The Ipoh railway station was at first designated to be a hospital and used before the 20th century as such before developing into a station. The original completion year of 1917 was hold up for three years due to the shortage of construction materials as well as high costs during World War I. Designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, it was first constructed and opened in 1935, making it the second concrete station to be assembled in the town.

7. Kinta Riverfront Walk

The Mini I-City of Ipoh which called the Kinta Riverfront Walk is located in Ipoh. There’s not only several attractive and colourful LED lights on the trees (Just like I-City in Shah Alam), this Riverwalk also has a few nice restaurant that faces the Ipoh river and frankly speaking.

9. Heritage House

Heritage house is the best way to retrace the lives of locals living here. There are plentiful artifacts, documents, antiquities, antiques, old furniture and calligraphy paintings on display which support you figure out the lives of these people from up to 125 years ago.All thanks to Wang Kun-Xiang who’s the monetary controller of the Heritage House. Mr. Xiang has a notable preference for antique collection and has completed his wish to form a nostalgic house that would display the modern residents the old culture, customs and traditions which were followed more than a century ago.on the ground floor you will find a barber shop, a Kopitiam and a Feng Shui air well filled with bonsai trees. You can also come across relics from the near past. On top, living areas have been decorated and filled with invaluable decorations. The furnishings here accurately reflect what life would have been like for a middle-class family at the turn of the 20th century. Definitely, visit to get a taste of the culture here.

10. Kwan Yin Tong Temple

There is about 75 figure of Kwan Yin here. Kwan Yin is the bodhisattva associated with compassion as venerated by East Asian Buddhists, usually as a female. The area is designed like the Japanese wishing fountain.
